Newbie Camping Guide
Never camped before? You’re in the right place. The Preppers Meet is beginner-friendly and community-driven — and you’ll see plenty of people camping for the first time. This guide covers the basics: what to bring, what to expect, and the simplest setup that keeps you comfortable.
You do not need hardcore gear. If you can stay warm, stay dry, and sleep, you’ll have a great time. Bring what you have — and keep it simple.
The “Minimum Comfort” Checklist
If you bring nothing else, focus on these four things:
Packing List (Beginner Friendly)
Sleep
- Sleeping bag (or blankets if that’s what you have)
- Sleeping pad or air mattress (a pad matters more than people think)
- Pillow (or stuff-sack with a hoodie inside)
- Optional: earplugs if you’re a light sleeper
Shelter
- Tent (or tarp setup)
- Ground tarp / footprint (keeps moisture down)
- Stakes + mallet (or a small hammer)
- Optional: extra tarp for rain / shade
Clothing
- Warm layer (fleece / hoodie)
- Rain layer (jacket or poncho)
- 2–3 pairs of socks (dry socks = happiness)
- Hat / toque for evenings
- Comfortable shoes + optional camp sandals
Food & Water
- Water jug or bottles (aim for “enough for the day”)
- Snacks you’ll actually eat (protein bars, trail mix, fruit)
- Cooler (optional but nice)
- Reusable cup / bottle
Lighting & Power
- Headlamp (best) or flashlight
- Spare batteries or a small power bank
- Phone cable
Helpful Extras (Nice to Have)
- Camp chair
- Bug spray
- Sunscreen
- Small first aid kit (bandages, blister care, pain relief)
- Wet wipes / hand sanitizer
- Toiletries (toothbrush, deodorant, etc.)
- Garbage bags (keep your site clean)
- Small towel
What to Expect On Site
- Arrive, park, and camp near your vehicle.
- Workshops run in classroom and field settings.
- Evenings: relaxed community vibe (bring layers).
- Washrooms are available (flushing toilets).
Simple Setup Tips
- Pick slightly higher ground (avoid low spots that collect water).
- Put your sleeping pad under you — it’s key for warmth.
- Change into dry socks before bed.
- Keep a headlamp within reach at night.
Don’t Own Gear Yet?
That’s normal. Start with the basics: shelter + sleep + warm clothes. Borrow from a friend, or grab budget gear. You can also come for the day and still enjoy the event.
